Bill Smith is an artist, scientist, and inventor whose works, while aesthetically beautiful, function primarily as a study in the design of nature, meant to inspire both appreciation and future investigation. Holding degrees in biology, chemistry, diesel mechanics, and sculpture, his multimedia installations are inspired by microcosmic structures that hold significance for society and its technological progress.

His cross-disciplinary pieces explore the structures of entities at the microscopic level as well as the universal. As Smith’s forms take shape, they reveal a symmetric beauty that challenges us to ponder the fragility of our surroundings and the possibilities they hold for scientific advancement.

Smith’s most recent project involves the use of smart materials and adaptive structures, which have the ability to alter their form or behavior in response to their environment. This new and quickly-emerging frontier has implications for civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering, and Smith’s investigations have led to developments that extend far beyond aesthetics. Smith’s approach to art and the hard sciences as complementary, not contrary, disciplines, reflects in practice his overarching message that the two seemingly disparate fields can inform and enrich one another.
