Produced in conjunction with Gibbes Museum of Art, Statement Pieces: Contemporary Fashion Design and the Gibbes Collection juxtaposes dynamic works of fine art from the museum’s permanent collection with contemporary fashion objects from the Barrett Barrera Projects fashion collection. Extraordinary garments by Alexander McQueen, COMME des GARÇONS, Dapper Dan, Gucci, Molly Goddard, Pam Hogg, and Serena Gili are presented alongside fashion forward figures in paintings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, abstract works of the mid-twentieth century, and contemporary sculpture and mixed media works of today. The exhibition will introduce innovative fashion to museum audiences and demonstrate the importance of design in a visual arts context.
The exhibition is currently on view at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina through April 27, 2025.
