“SPF1991” summer event series at projects+gallery

From Jun. 1 to Aug. 3 this summer, projects+gallery is hosting a series of art events titled SPF1991. Referencing a year just before the advent of mainstream internet access, SPF1991 will evoke the playful nostalgia and simple pleasures of the past, while also working to dismantle artistic gatekeeping.

The series includes five events: Carnival, Garage Sale, Picnic, Arts & Crafts and Energy. In collaboration with Corey Smale of SuperGiantWorld, there will be a gallery-scaled progressive mural painted by Edo Rosenblith, with contributions throughout the summer by Janie Stamm (early June), WORK/PLAY (mid Jun.) and Yowshien Kuo (late Jul.). Visitors are encouraged to leave their artistic mark by completing coloring sheets, which will be distributed at Carnival and subsequent events.

SPF 1991’s kick-off event is Carnival (Jun. 1), a full afternoon of activities reminiscent of school fairs, including classic carnival games, a photo booth, a palm reader, tattoo artist Andy May, refreshments and music by DJ Agile One. Garage Sale (Jun. 15) will sell items donated by the St. Louis community and offer craft cocktails and a hotdog vendor — the proceeds from which will benefit Home Sweet Home, a local non-profit.  Picnic (Aug. 10) is a limited-ticket summer picnic with a twist. It will include cold fried chicken, artisanal lemonade and sides by chef Ben Poremba, owner of Olio, Nixta and Benevolent King. Arts & Crafts (Jul. 13) will take place in partnership with Perennial, a St. Louis non-profit that aims to build a creative culture of sustainability in which discarded items are transformed into valued and cherished resources. The afternoon of artistically-driven workshops is open to the public. Energy (Jul. 27) features a kombucha tasting by Confluence Kombucha and a limited-ticket yoga class lead by Brianna Owens of Practicing Yoga.

A final, closing reception for the completed Mural will take place on Thursday, September 5th from 5-8 PM.
